Malpractice insurance is perhaps the last thing on a nursing student's mind as he or she prepares for nursing school. Aspiring nurses have to concentrate on finances, studying, passing their classes, getting enough sleep, surviving on Raman noodles, all the typical things that a student in any type of program has to worry about.

But a nursing student isn't in just any old type of educational program. At some point, they will be assisting registered nurses with patient care, and the second the nursing student sets foot in an educational facility, they could be held legally responsible for any mishaps that occur with a patient in the facility, or even any perceived mishaps.

Is that fair? Of course not. If a nursing student is sued when she didn't do anything wrong, will she be found liable? One would hope not. But the chances of winning in court are much higher when a nursing student has a lawyer who is looking out for their best interests, and most nursing students are not going to be able to afford to pay a lawyer's fees.

That's where student nursing insurance comes in. As the name implies, this is the type of insurance that will help defray lawyer expenses in case a student faces a medical malpractice suit in the course of performing their training duties as a student nurse. It may also pay out whatever judgment is awarded against the student if the student is found to be at fault. But again, a person represented by a competent attorney is much more likely to prevail in court.

You may ask; isn't the nursing school supposedly responsible for helping its student? Shouldn't the school pay for the lawyer? This may be a bitter pill to swallow but the reality is, schools do not concern themselves with such things. When a lawsuit hits, it's every man - or woman - for themselves.

And of course, once a student graduates and becomes a registered nurse, they should continue to maintain their own malpractice insurance, just as doctors do. It's a small investment when one considers the huge, expensive consequences of a budding lawsuit.

The importance of obtaining nursing student insurance can never be said too many times given the litigious society we live in today. Get more useful tips and information like this including information on a variety of nursing programs to jump start your career today!
